Best Rimless Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses with no rim or frame are a lightweight and fashionable option many people love to wear.

Rimless eyeglasses come in many styles and designs, and they tend to look less bold and sit much more lightweight on your face.

Some History on Rimless Eyeglasses

Rimless Eyeglasses are when the lenses of the eyeglasses are mounted directly onto the bridge, and the temples of the glasses, sometimes only the bridge or the temples.

There are two types of rimless glasses. The three-piece consists of lenses mounted on a bridge and two separate temple arms. Then you get Rimways with a supporting arch that connects the temples of the eyeglasses to the bridge for additional stability.

Rimless glasses became popular in the 1880s and remained popular during the 1960s; later, they reappeared in the 20th and 21st centuries; despite the shifts in their popularity, rimless eyeglasses are a unique style and have never completely gone out of fashion.

Most rimless eyeglasses are held into place or mounted using screws and hollow plastic rivets that fit into holes inside the lenses. These rivets are also called bushings.

When bushings are used, barbed metal pins in the temples and bridge of the glasses lock into these bushings to create a sort of pressure seal to securely hold the lenses in place.

Though rimless eyeglasses are much more cosmetically appealing, using the bushing method rather than the screw method makes the eyeglasses more fragile. It cannot be easy to repair them when they loosen or break. Most bushing-based rimless mounts are designed to allow you to easily pull the pins out of the lenses without causing any damage to reduce the cost of repairs and save time.

Keep in mind that rimless eyeglasses lack a frame. Thus they can get damaged much more easily than other types of eyeglasses. Most consumers need new lenses for the three-piece frames more regularly than any other eyeglass design.

Rimless lenses, the three-piece design lacks impact resistance and is not as wear and tear friendly as Rimways, which have an additional arch to absorb stress.

Benefits of Rimless Eyeglasses

Rimless Eyeglasses, though slightly more fragile, do hold some great benefits;

  • Not Noticeable – Many individuals dislike the look of eyeglasses on their faces and could be quite shy about it. Rimless eyeglasses are the least conspicuous eyeglasses that look almost transparent on your face. So, you would easily fix your visual needs without worrying about anyone noticing your eyeglasses.
  • Fashionable – Rimless eyeglasses have been popular since the 1800s, and have not quite lost their touch. Rimless eyeglasses are very classy in their appeal and are always fashionable. Most rimless glasses will likewise go unnoticed by many people, which is an advantage if you do not want to make the fact that you wear eyeglasses so prominent.
  • No Limits on The Lenses – Though rimless glasses require lenses that consist of different materials than what you are used to with regular eyeglasses, the options with the lenses for rimless eyeglasses are endless. You can choose any shape, design, or thickness of lenses for your rimless eyeglasses, and they are an excellent solution for prescription lenses.
  • Lightweight – Rimless eyeglasses can be easily worn the entire day as they are extremely lightweight on your face. Rimless eyeglasses place very little pressure or strain on your face and will not scratch or leave marks like most framed eyeglasses. Rimless eyeglasses are lightweight and almost feel as if they are not there on your face.
  • Costly – This is not, particularly a benefit but one of the cons of rimless eyeglasses. The more intricate designs may cost more than regular framed eyeglasses. Creating a rimless pair of eyeglasses takes much time and effort, and much detail goes into the process. Thus they may cost a little more. However, on the other hand, the cost of rimless frames for your eyeglasses is much less than other frame types.
